Gary is the name behind both restaurants and has built a strong local following over the years. His food has also had national recognition, with Gary appearing on BBC Two’s Britain’s Best Takeaways, where his cooking was judged on flavour, quality and consistency — something he’s continued to build on across both brands.
Soju, based in Beverley, is the more upmarket of the two. It’s now firmly positioned as a destination for posh Chinese food, with a refined menu that works brilliantly for special occasions, date nights and group celebrations. Alongside its main menu, Soju also runs a popular all-you-can-eat menu on Sundays, giving diners the chance to sample a wide range of dishes in a more relaxed, social way.
Sumo, with locations in Beverley and Hessle, offers a more casual dining experience. It’s all about familiar pan-Asian favourites, generous portions and an easygoing atmosphere that works well for catch-ups with friends or relaxed family meals.

Competition Terms & Conditions
- Soju / Sumo is the sponsor and provider of the competition prize.
- The prize is a meal for four people with 1 drink each at either Soju or Sumo in East Yorkshire.
- No purchase is necessary to enter this prize draw.
- One entry per person. Multiple entries from the same person may be disqualified.
- Entrants must be aged 18 or over and reside in the UK.
- You must enter the draw before Sunday 4 January 2026 at 11:30pm. Entries received after this time won’t be counted.
- The winner will be chosen at random from all valid entries received before the closing date.
- The winner will be contacted by email. If we don’t hear back within 48 hours, we reserve the right to draw a new winner.
- The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or any other alternative.
- The winner is responsible for their own travel to and from the venue.
- Hull What’s On and the sponsor reserve the right to amend or cancel the competition if necessary.
