Several weekends ago, I spent the majority of my Saturday in Bransholme’s North Point Shopping Centre courtesy of my girlfriend’s, unfortunately, pressing need to attend the nearby Urgent Treatment Centre. Now as an out-of-towner, I must admit to having heard less than desirable comments made against Bransholme, and, honestly, I was unsure what to expect. However, I can happily report that my time in Bransholme—albeit, restricted to North Point—was well-spent and thoroughly enjoyed. Therefore, I have decided to write about Bransholme in our latest ‘Area Guide’ installment and sincerely hope that I can do justice to this oft-unsung suburb of Hull.

Shopping
North Point Shopping Centre
The North Point Shopping Centre dominates the Bransholme shopping scene and houses more than sixty indoor retailers which include Boyes, Boots, Card Factory, Home Bargains, Greggs, CeX, and Cranshaws. Interestingly, there is an indoor market area that despite being on the wrong side of under-used, retains a number of interesting stalls such as Keys Butchers and North Point Pets and continues to possess great potential. My time in Bransholme was largely spent in North Point and it would be remiss of me not to praise the friendly demeanor of those whom I encountered. It is a rare thing, today, to find a community spirit so intact and this speaks volumes about the quality of the people in Bransholme and the area as a whole. Additionally, North Point is bargain central! I waltzed out of there with a smile on my face having bagged enough food to feed an army and a prized Sharpe’s Collector’s Edition DVD all for a snip of fifteen Pounds.

Recreational Activities
Bude Park, on the doorstep of both Kingswood and Bransholme, is one of the largest parks in Hull and home to an outdoor gym, modern playground, sports pitches, a seasonal water play area, and a multi-use games area.
History
I was happy to find, post-visit, that Bransholme is steeped in history. Honestly, I was struck by what I learnt. It seems that Bransholme dates at least as far back as 1086 as the Domesday Book (compiled by the Norman conquerors) notes a settlement known as Sudtone. Although, it is during the Second World War where the history of Bransholme really shines as it was home to RAF Sutton, which provided barrage balloons that were deployed to defend Hull’s vital docks and rail network. Now, for a history nerd like me, these historical credentials serve to mark Bransholme as a place of great significance and interest and one that adds much value to the surrounding Hull and East Riding region.
