Charming new sculpture in Hull’s Hepworth’s Arcade honours Hull’s silversmithing industry

A new sculpture is honouring Hull’s important silversmithing industry.

‘A Charm Bracelet for Hull’ will be at Hepworth’s Arcade until Saturday 12 August.

It’s been created by sculptor and printmaker Andi Dakin, who specialises in colourful artworks that are loaded with mischief!

His ideas and inspirations come from many sources, ranging from the creation and expansion of the universe to popular culture figures as diverse as Mary Poppins and Captain Beefheart.

Andi will be at the Arcade to explain more about his bracelet sculpture, where you’ve got the chance to print your own silver charm.

Meet Andi on the following dates:

Friday 28 July – 1pm-4pm

Friday 4 August – 1pm-4pm

Friday 11 August – 1pm-4pm

Saturday 12 August – 9am-12pm

Silversmithing – the act of making jewellery and other objects from silver – flourished in the Church Lane area of Hull from the 16th century through until the late 18th century.

Whilst it has declined as a traditional industry, a new generation of designers and makers have kept the craft alive, and academic courses in silversmithing are also offered.

The ‘Charm Bracelet for Hull” installation is the latest part of the Hi! Whitefriargate Cultural Programme funded by Historic England in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.

Portfolio holder for culture and leisure, Councillor Rob Pritchard, said: “This is another great chance to explore the history of the Whitefriargate area.

“The street has been at the heart of culture and contemporary life in Hull for centuries.

“The display is being housed in the historic Hepworth’s Arcade, and there are plenty of chances to meet Andi to find out how he created the piece.”
