Children's Festival of Words 2023

About Children's Festival of Words 2023

East Riding Libraries are delighted to announce a varied and exciting programme for the Children’s Festival of Words, which will be back with live events this summer. The main festival will run from Saturday, 29 July to Sunday, 6 August, and there will also be activities and events throughout July, August and September.

Tickets are available now. New for this year will be events in support and celebration of Beverley Pride, taking place on Saturday, 5 August at Beverley Library. Families can join drag queen Regina Sparkles for Drag Queen Storytime. Join Regina as she reads ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ and gets everyone up and moving in this hilarious and very noisy storytime. Author LD Lapinski will also be there to talk about their new book, Jamie. Jamie is a non-binary kid who likes nothing better than hanging out with their two best friends, Daisy and Ash. However, with only a boys school and a girls school to go to in Year 7, no one has thought about Jamie, and where they are going to go!

Families will be able to meet the author and ask them questions, as well as get their books signed. East Riding Libraries staff will be hosting a number of storytimes throughout the day, where they will be celebrating you! Listen to stories and enjoy make and take crafts which recognise just how unique everyone is and how the smallest act of kindness and understanding is so special.

Puppets, Plays and Storydays are back again with an interactive and energetic retelling of Michael Rosen’s fantastic story, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ A classic children’s story, this event will be touring around libraries in the East Riding, starting at North Bridlington Library on 29 July and finishing at Beverley Library on 6 August. During that time, it will also be stopping at Hessle, Haltemprice, Pocklington, South Cave, Willerby, Goole, and Market Weighton.

Always wanted to learn how to make stop motion animations? Author and animator Andrew Sanders will be running a series of workshops in Beverley, Pocklington, Goole, and North Bridlington Libraries that will teach visitors about creating stories, modelling characters and using stop motion software to create their very own film! As well as this, Star Wars artist, JAKe, will be joining East Riding Libraries for a series of ‘How to Draw Star Wars’ workshops, where young padwans can become drawing jedis. With sessions taking place across the East Riding, JAKe will show you how to draw your favourite characters from the Star Wars universe, including Droids, Wookies, Bounty Hunters and more.
