Chris Cleverley - The Wrecking Ball Arts Centre

About Chris Cleverley - The Wrecking Ball Arts Centre

Dream-Folk artist Chris Cleverley brings his groundbreaking new sound to Hull for November Album Release Tour.

Chris Cleverley is among a new wave of pioneering artists carving an uncharted path through the UK acoustic landscape. Endorsements from The Times, The Telegraph and BBC Radio have led to his receipt of FATEA Magazine’s ‘Male Artist of the Year’ Award, fueling his rising trajectory. His new album ‘Broadcast The Secret Verse’ showcases an unprecedented new sound combining elements of Lo-Fi Folk, Ambient and Dream-Pop music, ushering in a bold new artistic era as he takes to the road for his nine-date November UK album release tour.

The album has already been making waves, with the first singles ‘Chlorophyll’ and ‘Still Life’ championed by BBC National Radio and multi-national cultural tastemakers V13 and Whatson Magazines. Produced by Reveal Records artist John Patrick Elliott (The Little Unsaid), it is an album of total rebirth & reinvention. The vibrant, uplifting feel creates immediate associations with Indie greats Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers & Elliott Smith, while echoes of Aphex Twin and Jóhann Jóhannsson reflect eclectic influences. Bold, experimental production is underpinned by Cleverley’s characteristically complex fingerstyle guitar techniques.

It is precisely this guitar style for which his live performance is renowned and that which he will champion on the ‘Secret Verses’ tour, which is funded by Help Musicians UK’s artistic support programme. Cleverley looks forward to sharing intimate stripped-back arrangements of his new material, bridging the gap between his contemporary songwriting and the 60s Folk Revival spirit of artists like Joni Mitchell and John Martyn, which runs through his music.

With numerous performances throughout Yorkshire under his belt, this November sees his first appearance at Hull’s iconic Wrecking Ball Arts Centre, which is also host to the much revered independent record store.
Audiences can catch Chris up close and personal in the pin-drop silence of this intimate venue, soaking in his expert musicianship as well as the deep thoughtfulness of his storytelling. With diverse songwriting touching on everything from pervasive artificial intelligence and mass displacement of people, to the transformative power of deep connection with nature, his performance is primed for the deeply conflicted 21st Century emotional landscape. Greeting some of our most challenging issues head on with insightful and meditative balance, his genuine warmth and humour is renowned for leaving audiences feeling wholesome and restored. At times abrasive, at others uplifting, but never in between, this special evening promises to be the perfect companion piece to our head-spinning modern age.
