Since 2019, History staff and students at the University of Hull have been helping Team GB find out more about the heritage of Great Britain’s Olympic athletes all the way back to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Our latest research explores the histories of Olympians from Hull. From the ‘Fighting O’Kellys’ of the early 20th century to gold medallist Luke Campbell in 2012, boxing has been part of Hull’s Olympic history for more than a hundred years. Women who led the charge for gender equality in Olympic judo in the 1980s-90s, a record-breaking road cyclist who died tragically in 1926 and is still commemorated through memorial races today, the rifleman whose engineering company helped build our own University campus in 1927, and more than a dozen other athletes in nine different sports have played their own roles in Hull’s Olympic past. Join us to find out more about their stories and what we can learn from them about access to Olympic sports in Hull and around the country today.
