“Heartwarming and joyous” – Reviewing Pop Music at Hull Truck Theatre

‘Pop Music,’ the latest production by Hull Truck Theatre and by Anna Jordan, is a delightful tribute to the ever-evolving world of pop culture. This captivating play takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through the music that has shaped generations, well for the last 40 years (was it really 40 years, it only seems like last week), all while exploring the intricate dynamics of human relationships.

We spend the evening with ‘G’ played by David Ahmad and old school friend Kayla (Natalie Anderson from Emmerdale) as they enjoy the free bar at their friend’s wedding.  Both love pop music and dancing and realise they went to the same school, although ‘G’ disappeared suddenly in year 9, we later find out why.

The brilliance of ‘Pop Music’ lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the universal language of music with heartfelt storytelling. The play’s narrative, infused with wit and charm, revolves around the lives of its characters, beautifully brought to life by the talented cast. Their performances are nothing short of exceptional, evoking laughter and tears in equal measure.

The production’s set design and lighting create a visually immersive experience, enhancing the emotional depth of the story. As the characters navigate the highs and lows of life, the carefully curated soundtrack of iconic pop hits serves as both a backdrop and a driving force, resonating with the audience on a profound level.  The set is simple.  It’s just a chequered dancefloor with 2 tables at opposite ends from which our characters move to and from, usually to refill their drinks.  Our players dance around each other, seemingly un-noticed to either one, as they sing lyrics and talk about the music.

What truly sets ‘Pop Music’ apart is its ability to connect with people of all ages. Whether you’re a fan of the classic tunes that defined an era or a lover of contemporary hits, this play offers something for everyone. It explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery, leaving the audience with a renewed appreciation for the power of music to shape our lives.

In summary, ‘Pop Music’ is a heartwarming and joyous celebration of the songs that have become the soundtrack of our lives. Hull Truck Theatre’s production is a must-see for anyone who has ever found solace, joy, or inspiration in the melodies of pop music. Prepare to be swept away on a musical journey that will leave you tapping your feet and humming along, long after the final curtain falls.

Finally, Ahmad and Anderson are absolutely fantastic.  They worked brilliantly together and were a joy to watch.
