Hull City Council’s Education Safeguarding Manager, Philip Painter, has been shortlisted for the LGC’s Rising Star award.

The annual LGC awards celebrate excellence in local government.

Phillip Painter has been shortlisted for his work with Hull’s schools to ensure that children and young people are educated within environments which recognise a shared responsibility for keeping children safe from harm.

Philip has re-established safeguarding links across the city, and he has been instrumental in forging new relationships between schools and the council. He has devised and delivered a training programme to over 800 members of school staff to promote a culture which prioritises the safeguarding of children.

Councillor Shane McMurray, Portfolio Holder for children’s services sad: “Phillip works tirelessly in his promotion of safeguarding and improving outcomes for children and young people.

“I am delighted he has been recognised as a Rising Star!”

Phillip has developed guidance for safeguarding in education during Covid, and provides advice when there is a bubble or school closure regarding children who may be placed at heightened risk whilst not in education settings. He also works closely with the social workers involved in the Social Workers in Schools programme.

Phillip has submitted a successful funding bid to the Department for Education enabling the service to appoint to the post of Integrated Practice Officer. The role will build a deeper understanding of how to address domestic abuse, in turn providing safer outcomes for children and families.

The LGC awards take place on 4 November.
