Hull’s Guildhall to host event offering support for unpaid carers this Friday

Carers are being invited to attend this year’s Carers Market Place Event, in celebration of Carers Week 2023.

It’s taking place on Friday 9 June at the Guildhall in Hull city centre.

The event, which is hosted by The Carers Information & Support Service (CISS) on behalf of Hull’s Carer’s Partnership Board, will take place between 10:30am and 2:30pm.

The event aims to offer a wealth of information and support to carers in just one place.

More detail about the event can be found below:

  • Over 45 services and organisations will be in attendance to provide information, advice and support for unpaid carers
  • There will be information and access to the online Carers UK Digital Resource for Carers
  • Makaton taster sessions
  • The launch of the ‘The Champs’ Carers Awards
  • A chance to take part in a consultation about experiences of hospital discharges

The 2021 Census revealed that there are over 21,000 unpaid carers in Hull, but the true figure may be even higher.

An unpaid carer is somebody who cares, unpaid, for a loved one who cannot manage on their own. This support may include washing, dressing, feeding, shopping or picking up and administering medication, as well as providing company and emotional support. Many unpaid carers do not see themselves as carers because they are looking after a loved one, or sometimes the level of care being provided gradually increases over time. Unpaid carers can end up neglecting themselves in order to prioritise the person they care for, leaving them at risk of isolation, burnout or financial strain.

That’s why a range of local organisations are coming together to showcase the range of support available to unpaid carers.

Any member of the public, or health or social care professionals who want to gain further knowledge about support available for carers, are also welcome to attend.

Councillor Linda Chambers, the portfolio holder for Adult Services at Hull City Council said: “Many of us don’t ever plan to become carers, so when somebody is thrust into the role of caring for a loved one, it can be difficult to navigate this new reality.

“I’m really proud we are part of this important information event, which will offer support to all types of unpaid carers who provide invaluable support to our city’s most vulnerable people.”
