Hull’s Spurn Lightship upgraded ahead of spring reopening

New graphics, displays and technology are being installed on the Spurn Lightship to tell its rich story.

Specialist contractor Marcon will undertake the work for the interpretative fit-out, ahead of the reopening this spring.

Marcon is an award-winning museum and heritage fit-out contractor with an in-house specialist joinery workshop. Operating across the UK and Ireland, they have assisted with the opening of many high-profile museums, exhibitions, and visitor centres. Marcon has previously worked on HMS Victory, Titanic Belfast Gallery and Templemore Baths to name a few.

The fit-out for the Spurn Lightship focuses on new projections, film, immersive sound, and graphics so visitors can explore the lightship and its story.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is the final stage in preparing the lightship for its reopening.

“By adding new displays to the lightship as well as is retaining its original features, visitors will be able to learn more about the fascinating stories and the importance to the Humber will be told for everyone to enjoy.”

Martin McErlean, Heritage Contract Manager at Marcon commented: “The Spurn Lightship has an important story to tell of how it played a key role in Hull’s Maritime industry.

“We are delighted to be working alongside Hull City Council and design team HSD to bring this story to life through a range of media and interpretation, creating an interesting and informative experience for all who come to visit.”

The new displays will showcase the history, the stories of navigating the treacherous estuary and what it was like to live and work on board.

The Spurn Lightship is due to open to visitors in its new location in late spring/early summer.

Hull Maritime is a major regeneration project funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It encompasses the major refurbishment of Hull Maritime Museum and Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new attraction at North End Shipyard, the new home for the restored Arctic Corsair, and the Spurn Lightship restoration.
