‘The Out of Towners’ is a (relatively) new and objectively captivating podcast hosted by Maeve Black and Liam Scroggie, providing a fresh perspective on the vibrant city of Kingston-Upon-Hull. Through intriguing interviews and discussions on in-vogue Hull-related topics, the podcast offers a deep dive into the city’s culture, history, and local pride. ‘The Out of Towners’ can be heard on 107FM and is available on Spotify and YouTube.
In their latest episode, the Out of Towners had the pleasure of hosting Dave Bushnell, the founder and managing director of Hull What’s On, in the 107FM studio. The episode dives into Dave’s experiences as a Mancunian in Hull, his remarkable contributions to the city’s cultural scene, and several of his unique observations of the city.
Dave, who migrated from Manchester to Hull in the mid-Noughties, began his journey in the city by working various jobs, including a role in a call centre. Fueled by a desire to build Hull’s reputation and keep the locals informed about events in their hometown, he founded Hull What’s On.
During their conversation, the Out of Towners briefly explored Dave’s early years in Hull and his observations on how the city has evolved over time as well as where it might be in several years’ time. The majority of this episode centres around Dave’s distinctive take on Hull’s perception, particularly how a perceived low opinion of Hull amongst locals might be holding the city back.
