Renovation work underway on new home of Hull’s Arctic Corsair

Renovation work on the new home of the Arctic Corsair gets underway.

The transformation of the dry-dock at North End Shipyard includes the removal of vegetation, repointing of the dock walls, localised demolition and treatment to existing ironwork.

Scaffolding around the perimeter of the dock walls has been erected to enable the work to take place.

This work is part of Hull Maritime, a major regeneration project funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It encompasses the major refurbishment of Hull Maritime Museum and Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new attraction at North End Shipyard and the new home for the restored Arctic Corsair and the restoration of the Spurn Lightship.

The two-storey visitor centre is currently being built and will tell the story of the dockyard and its 400 years of shipbuilding history and the Arctic Corsair and her illustrious career.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “Reviving this area of the Old Town and creating a new tourist attraction for our residents and visitors is an important part of the Hull Maritime project.

“It’s exciting to see works get underway to the new dry-dock and permanent home for the Arctic Corsair, breathing new life into an area steeped in maritime history.”

The North End Shipyard and the restored Arctic Corsair are expected to open to visitors in autumn 2024.
