Last night, we had the pleasure of attending the performance of “Calendar Girls the Musical” in Hull, and it was nothing short of heartwarming and memorable. This award-winning musical, based on a true story, is currently on its 2023-2024 tour across the UK, and Hull was fortunate to host it until this Saturday.
The story revolves around a group of ordinary women in a small Yorkshire Women’s Institute who embark on a unique venture to pose nude for a charity calendar. Led by a stellar cast, including Tanya Franks, Maureen Nolan, Lyn Paul, Amy Robbins, Paula Tappenden, Marti Webb, and Honeysuckle Weeks, the production offers an unforgettable theatrical experience that strikes the perfect balance between heartwarming and hilarious.
From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is transported to the charming village of Knaresborough, where the WI members gather for their monthly meeting. The atmosphere is cozy and conversational as they discuss craft projects and village gossip. Yet, beneath their seemingly ordinary lives, a profound bond of friendship lies, ready to be put to the test.
Annie (Tanya Franks) and Chris (Amy Robbins) propose the daring idea of the charity calendar, initially met with shock and hesitation. However, Annie’s infectious enthusiasm and the courage displayed by Jessie (Lyn Paul) with her inspiring song “What Age Expects” quickly win hearts.
The musical numbers in “Calendar Girls” are not only catchy but also deeply moving, perfectly capturing the characters’ emotions and the essence of the story. Songs like “Dare” and “Everyone Knows” are particularly memorable, celebrating the courage and determination of these remarkable women.
The cast’s performances are simply outstanding. Tanya Franks embodies Annie with a compelling blend of strength and vulnerability. Maureen Nolan steals the scene as Ruth, initially reluctant but ultimately enthusiastic. Lyn Paul’s portrayal of Jessie is charming and supportive, while Amy Robbins brings charisma to the role of Chris. Paula Tappenden shines as the reserved yet thoughtful Marie, and Honeysuckle Weeks adds a wealth of experience and warmth to Cora.
The production’s set design and costumes, though simple, are evocative. The Village Hall serves as the primary setting, with clever set changes conveying other locations effectively. Lighting is masterfully used to create intimacy and emotional depth.
In a touching gesture, the show doesn’t offer traditional merchandise but rather has a collection box to raise funds for Blood Cancer research, which is fitting given the show’s themes. However, as a collector of show keyrings, I couldn’t help but wish for a sunflower keyring with proceeds donated to Blood Cancer UK.
“Calendar Girls the Musical” is a heartwarming and humorous celebration of friendship, courage, and the remarkable impact of women. It’s a must-see for anyone who wants to laugh, shed a tear, and be inspired. The full standing ovation from the audience at the end of the show was richly deserved.
If you’re in Hull this week, don’t miss the chance to experience this wonderful production for yourself before it moves on to captivate audiences elsewhere on its tour. Tickets available here.
