“An absolute blast” – Reviewing I Should Be So Lucky at Hull New Theatre

I was lucky to be invited to Hull New Theatre this week to see the fantastic production of Stock Aitken Waterman’s I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY – The Musical. Wow, what a fun night I had too.

The story follows Ella (Lucie-Mae Sumner) who is stood up at the altar by her fiancé Nathan (Billy Roberts). She decides to go on the honeymoon anyway with her Nan, Mum, Bridesmaids, and Bridesman to Turkey. The show follows Nathan following Ella out to Turkey, trying to win her back, and Ella and her party’s adventures.

The set was colourful, with neon lights, heart-shaped surrounds, a bed, and chairs, it was like Valentine’s Day on drugs. It was the perfect reflection of the heyday of neon and spandex. Every small detail had been thought of.

The songs were a trip down memory lane, toe-tapping, arm waving, catchy and infectious tunes that everyone in the audience loved and were so well sung by the cast and ensemble. The title song of course “I should be so lucky”, “Too Many Broken Hearts”,   “Never too late”, “Hand on Your Heart”, “Respectable”,  “Venus”, and “Never gonna give you up”. The hits kept on coming. There was not one song that the audience didn’t remember. Watch out for Bonnie (Kayla Carter) whose voice was fantastic.

The writing by Debbie Isitt was hilarious, fast-paced, witty and sharp and had the audience laughing all night. She has given us endearing characters and a heart-warming story.

The choreography by Jason Gilkison was slick, energetic and fun, being well danced by the cast and ensemble who all looked to be having an absolute blast. This is one of those shows that you know the cast loves going on night after night as they have so much fun and it showed.

But, beyond the flashy aesthetics and catchy tunes, “I Should Be So Lucky” has heart. It’s a story of love, friendship, and the courage to follow your dreams, wrapped up in a glittering package that is sure to leave the audience smiling. It’s a perfect fun-filled romp that is perfect for anyone craving a dose of 80’s nostalgia. You will leave the auditorium on a high and sing the tunes all the way home and into next week.
