World Car Free Day: New research by Hull Trains shows 92% reduction in emissions when travelling by train

New research has revealed that people who leave their cars at home and instead travel from Hull to London on Hull Trains bi-mode Paragon Fleet can save 92% in carbon emissions.

The data from Hull Trains will be welcomed by UK travellers who are increasingly looking for greener methods of transport. All data has been produced and verified by independent sustainability experts Arup, on behalf of Hull Trains.

Travelling by rail from Hull to London King’s Cross produces 12 times less CO2 than driving, with 5.42 kgCO2e by train compared to 67.2 kgCO2e by car.

Customers at all locations along Hull Trains’ route to London King’s Cross can view the CO2 savings they can make at the operator’s newly launched ‘travelling sustainably’ webpage at https://www.hulltrains.co.uk/your-experience/sustainable-travel.

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director at Hull Trains, said: “We welcome this latest research which underlines once again how train travel is one the greenest forms of transport. Just one train journey can remove hundreds of cars from the roads. Not only is it more of a sustainable form of transport, but a faster way of getting from A to B.

“Hull Trains already has one of the most sustainable fleets in the UK: our trains run on both electric and diesel and since their introduction in 2019, we have reduced our carbon emissions significantly. By giving all of our customers information about the emissions they can save from their preferred departure location, we hope to empower them to make decisions in the best interests of our environment.”

The new sustainability page is just the latest initiative to assist in Hull Trains’ journey to becoming more sustainable. The business has already made significant energy savings by moving its headquarters to Cherry Tree Court whilst drivers have been trained in energy-saving driving techniques. The company also continues to look at pollution prevention and resource conversation.

Hull Trains’ sustainability focus forms part of the wider rail industry’s Green Travel Pledge – a commitment to engage and empower passengers, businesses, and business travellers to make more informed choices by providing detailed, accurate and reliable data on the carbon emissions of rail journeys.
