This Hull pub hides a connection to the Titanic – and some phenomenal food and drink!

There aren’t many pubs in Hull quite like The White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street. Rebuilt in 1904 for the Hull Brewery Company over an earlier pub on the same site, it’s now owned by [Name], who’s lived in East Yorkshire all their life. After spotting the building sitting empty and falling into disrepair, they decided to take it on – lovingly restoring it and getting it back open in 2018 after six years of closure.

The result is a true gem of Hull’s pub scene, recognised by CAMRA as a site of national historic importance. Inside, you’ll find all sorts of fascinating details from the early 1900s, but the real showstopper is the curved ceramic bar, crafted by Burmantofts Pottery of Leeds. It’s one of only a handful of surviving examples in the country, and when you see it up close, it’s easy to understand why it’s so special.

Alongside the bar, the pub’s original mahogany cabinets still stand proudly – and according to local rumour, they might have been made by the same craftsmen who worked on the Titanic. Whether that’s true or not, it certainly adds to the charm.

Today, The White Hart is celebrated for its huge selection of real ales and craft beers, with plenty from local breweries and others from around the world. You’ll even find some unique options on tap, like a bright blue raspberry sour.

And if you’re feeling hungry, their neighbours at Food For Cowboys serve up Mexican-inspired dishes straight to your table – tacos, loaded nachos, small plates and brunch favourites, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options too.

So if you’re looking for a proper pub with history, character, and a cracking beer list, then pay a visit to The White Hart next time you’re in Hull city centre.

You’ll find The White Hart at 109 Alfred Gelder Street, Hull HU1 1HB, open Monday to Thursday from 4 pm to 11 pm, Friday and Saturday from 12 pm to 11 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 10 pm.
